CNAM (Caller ID Name) is the name associated with a phone number that appears on the recipient's caller ID when you make an outbound call. Instead of displaying only a phone number, CNAM allows the recipient to see a business or individual name, helping them identify who is calling. CNAM is commonly referred to as Caller ID Name or Calling Name Delivery.
For example:
Phone Number |
CNAM Display |
|---|---|
| (555) 123-4567 | ABC Dental Clinic |
| (555) 987-6543 | John Smith |
The CNAM of a number can be represented as a string of text no longer than 15 characters and presented in uppercase letters as an industry standard.
- CNAM cannot start with a number; it should begin with a letter.
- Can only contain letters, numbers, periods, commas, and spaces.
- Must be a unique name or value, cannot be a generic value, such as a City/State.
Why is CNAM Important?
When patients or customers receive calls from unknown numbers, they may ignore the call or assume it is spam. Displaying your business name can improve trust and make it easier for recipients to recognise your organisation. CNAM helps practices to:
- Increase answer rates for outbound calls.
- Improve brand recognition.
- Provide a more professional caller experience.
- Reduce the likelihood of calls being ignored due to unfamiliar numbers.
